The Continuum

the space, the time, the continuum… the continue… um… how will i continue? i will carry the torch the best i can, using materials from my time and my space, dense durable materials free from knots and natural imperfections, rough, tough, rugged, flutes that don’t warp, split, crack, swell, or break, but make them look natural, aged, futuristic, glittery, cotton candy like, or anything i can think of or whatever people suggest, and make them with the sweetest and purest voices that can be summoned by an old man with many years of hard earned experience. the ancient people would have loved the weather ready materials we have and take for granted today. imagine a prehistoric human seeing a diamond coated glitter flute that is water proof and sounds like cedar or bamboo, seeing a psychedelic galaxy looking shiny flute would blow their minds. i like to get people started with flutes, i like to tell them they can, i like to show them how, i like to give away all the secrets no one gave to me, the things that took me decades to figure out (i grew up without youtube or even internet), i love to make traditional native american style, ancestral puebloan style, hindustani bansuri, and shakuhachi, and i love the looks on peoples faces when they hear them and when they walk away with one and are eager to find their own way, to breathe their stories and dreams into the ethers, to find their inner space, to sit in the sacred circle of all of our ancestors from all over the world, joining the ranks of a lineage of wind song whisperers going back way beyond the last ice age, before the first beat of the first drum, before any thought of any stringed instrument, all the way back to when there were only two ways to sing, thee obvious… through the mouth, using vocal chords or more effectively through the flute, using the heart. so i carry the torch as i have for the last nearly thirty years and i will continue to as well as i can for another thirty years if i am to be so lucky and some torch bearers will be with me here at inner space, they can carry it when i no longer can, it is the highlight of my life to find and walk with these people, for this instrument, for our ancestors, for our future, and for you… if you do or will eventually submerse yourself in these calming therapeutic waters of the incredible and historically significant relic held so precious by so many for so long. i will be here torch in hand walking the flute path helping who i can along the way. that is how i will continue.
